Keeping The Kids Safe

by on Apr.15, 2012, under More Posts

I am a kindergarten teacher and each month we have fire safety month. This month I wanted to get some new fire safety tips for the kids, so I went online and did a Google search for fire safety tips for kids. I think it is definitely important that kids know what to do if they are ever in the situation where there is a fire. Also I want them to know how to not play with matches or other things that can be flammable. I know a few of my students like in apartment buildings and they need to make sure they have an escape path to follow if there is ever a fire in their building.

Still Waters Run Deep

by on Mar.30, 2012, under General

My mother and father had an interesting relationship. We girls never really saw them fight but we never really saw them express too much love towards one another either. They were kind enough and definitely took care of us and one another but there generally were little to no displays of affection or endearing words spoken. Not that we saw anyway. I suppose that is why I was so surprised to find several hundred love letters amongst my mother’s things after her death. My parents had written to one another almost daily while my dad was overseas during World War II. The letters were rich and full with love and adoration for one another. Those letters are the greatest gift my parents ever gave me.

The Not So Little Mermaid

by on Mar.27, 2012, under General

I grew up in a middle class home. We had all the things that everyone else in the neighborhood had including three bedrooms, one bathroom and a two car garage. The one thing that set us apart however, was our beautiful, blue, swimming pool. Our backyard was the centerpiece for the entire street. Every kid within several blocks would show up at our door on early summer mornings with towel in hand and swimsuit on. Of course, we all played the regular pool games of Marco Polo and water volleyball. My favorite game however, was pretending I was a mermaid. Want to know a secret? It remains a favorite forty years later.

One Man’s Fun Is Another Man’s Insanity

by on Mar.24, 2012, under General

I have always had a long list of things I enjoy doing. Most of them are singular, peaceful activities such as reading, writing, movie watching or gardening. Recently however, I was invited to go camping and boating with my older children and their families. It seemed like a great time to spend with family so I happily accepted. Little did I understand that boating included hanging onto a tube for dear life while being dragged behind a speeding boat by an adult child exacting childhood revenge from his mother. I believe I will go back to my safer, saner activities once my body has healed and I can hold a book or garden trowel again.

Trying to cheer up the fire warden

by on Mar.21, 2012, under More Posts

I often find the fire warden at work quite evasive. He used to have an outgoing personality and was always sharing a joke. This has all changed. He often does not engage in coversation with employees and often keeps to himself. I think he is still getting over his wedding which was a complete disaster. He was going to get married last year however the day before the wedding, his partner had a change of mind and could not go through with the cermony. She took off overseas and he has not seen her since. I would like to be able to help him but I have never been in the situation. Last week we had a small fire in the workplace and he was great and he remained incredibly calm. I hope one day he reverts to his jovial self.

Dinnertime Melancholy

by on Mar.20, 2012, under General

When I was growing up, more than forty years ago, we lived in a very diverse neighborhood. One of our neighbors had escaped from Yugoslavia during the communist reign of terror. He now lived with his wife and children on our middle-class street where he was safe to come and go with no fear of being tortured or murdered. I use to love eating dinner at their home where the food was always delicious and the heavy-accented conversations were riveting. One of my favorite meals there was stuffed cabbage. I made Mrs. Prebeg’s stuffed cabbage for my family the other night. As we ate, I remembered the love of neighbors and wished I could hear those delicious stories one more time.

Recession Is No Recess

by on Mar.16, 2012, under General

Turn on the news and you are guaranteed to hear about today’s economic woes. Depending on what news station you choose to listen to, you are bound to hear one of the following: things are going to get much better soon, no need to panic or things are going to get much worse, say goodbye to life as we know it. My choice, when it comes to the news, is to turn the channel. I am not interested in opinion and the fact regarding the economy is this, it’s all based on opinion. So many people with so many opinions, none of them able to truly foretell the future. That’s my opinion, anyway.

Some Days Are Like That

by on Mar.13, 2012, under General

Today is one of those days. The kind where you get up happy, ready to face whatever may come your way and then you actually climb out of bed and realize what lies ahead. All those things that needed to be finished last night now lay in front of you like last night’s dirty dishes smelling up the kitchen. Only these unfinished things smell up your life. Then you remember there is no detergent for life’s smelly messes and that realization just about sends you back to your bed. Some days are like that and today are one of those days.

Running From the Fire

by on Mar.09, 2012, under More Posts

I saw a fire last year while I was out on a run. I had actually never seen a real blazing fire before. It was far more terrifying then any inferno I had ever seen in the movies. An apartment building was on fire. It was three stories tall, and on the side of the building there was a three story fire escape ladder. I was petrified that somebody might lose their life in the fire. I watched for a few minutes but the cops and firefighters cleared the scene. I was very relieved to read the next day in the paper that there were no fatalities.
